5 Home Resolutions for the New Year

The nice thing about new years is they give you the feeling of a fresh start, and with that, opportunities to make great changes in your life. Why not bring some of those positive changes into your home with these 5 home resolutions?
1. Resolve to spend at least 20 minutes a day on bettering your home: Whether it’s a quick sweep and some tidying up, or organizing a junk drawer, promise yourself you’ll put 20 minutes a day into your home. You’ll be rewarded with a cleaner and happier home in no time!
2. Resolve to sort pictures: If you’re like most people, you probably have a few, or dozens, of boxes of old pictures put away somewhere. Plan to go through them and display your favourites. Then, organize the others into albums for quick reference next time you’re looking for one.
3.Resolve to have a safe home: Make sure you have carbon monoxide and smoke detectors on each floor in your home. Purchase a radon testing kit (only about $40!) to detect the odor-less, but potentially fatal!, gas in your home. Make sure to empty the lint trap from your dryer regularly, as well. When lint builds up it becomes more flammable and can start fires in your home.
4. Resolve to reduce your carbon footprint: Sometimes when we’re in a hurry we’ll leave several lights on in our home. These lights use valuable energy when no one is even home, and contribute to growing environmental concerns. Unplug technology you aren’t using, turn off your lights, use less water, and recycle, and not only will your monthly bills lower, so will your carbon footprint!
5.Resolve to implement a “no shoes in the house” rule: Studies show that by wearing outdoor shoes inside the home, you are bringing toxic materials and bacteria into your house. The sand and dirt on outdoor shoes also wears down hard surfaces like wood flooring. Consider a friendly sign placed by the front door reminding guests to remove their shoes, and keep a basket of extra slippers and socks handy.
