6 Ways to Winter-proof Your Home

It may only be October, but Calgary winters are known to arrive quickly and furiously. So, why not get a jump-start on winter-proofing your home with these quick tips? These 6 winter-proofing ideas will help keep you warm, while also saving you money on your heating bill!

  1. Clear your patio: It’s important to bring in, or at least cover, all patio furniture and your grill. Even painted aluminum can rust so it’s important to keep snow off of it if you don’t want to have to replace it each year!
  2. Fill in the gaps: With time, homes begin to get cracks in their foundation. Small cracks and gaps are easily fixable and will also help prevent cold air from getting in. Purchase some foam and caulk at any home improvement store and you’ll be all set!
  3. Purchase an electronic thermostat: For less than $25 you can get a programmable thermostat. This means that when you’re not home you can have the heat set lower, and then come up shortly before you arrive back home. The thermostat will pay for itself in lower energy bills in no time!
  4. Purchase heat tape: If you run heat tape along the edges of your roof and your gutter, it will prevent ice from forming around your home. Not only does ice around your home make it colder, falling ice is very dangerous.
  5. Replace your furnace filter: A dirty filter actually costs you more money than a new and clean filter because dirty filters make the furnace work harder. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning become very taxing on the furnace and its lifespan is shortened with a dirty filter.
  6. Place rugs on hard flooring: Not only do rugs keep your feet cozy on cold days, they actually stop cold air from leaking into your home via the floor.

These 6 tips will quickly help you save money on your energy bill, while also proving to be beneficial to the environment, and making your home the coziest and most welcoming place possible!
